Can you believe it? Summer is almost over and it’s back to school for the kiddos. It seems like they are shortening summer every year. At least here in California they get out for Summer on June 8th and return to school August 10th. What’s up with that? When I was growing up we got out June 5th and returned sometime in September. It’s ridiculous. They have about ten or so days here called ‘Teacher Work Days’ where the kids don’t have school just random days of no school so the teachers can work? Then they shorten the Summer because the kids had all the extra days off during the year for so called ‘Teacher Work Days’. I’m not a teacher and I know they work hard and I love them and respect them and agree they should be paid a ton more and all that jazz so this rant is not about the teachers. But what the heck? The kids didn’t ask for all the random days off. I’m sure if it were up to the kids they’d enjoy having a longer summer.
With that being said, summer is just too short. It’s time to start getting school clothes, shoes, backpacks, lunch pails, and supplies ready. Time to go over sight words and letter sounds with my soon to be 1st grader. Picking up schedules for the high schooler and middle schooler this week. Can’t believe they are as old as they are. Time is just flying by. Super excited for my oldest though, she’ll get to experience prom, homecoming, pep rallies and cheering for her school’s football and basketball teams. She is going to have a blast this year. My 8th grader is going to be top dog at his school now in the highest grade so he should also have a great year. My little guy is going into 1st grade so big changes for him, his Kindergarten teacher was awesome, we just loved her. She worked with him so well and was so patient. I guess you’d have to be to be teaching 5 and 6-year olds all day every day for a whole school year. But yeah, she was awesome. She did mention that the jump from Kindergarten to 1st was big and not very gradual so I’m praying he adjusts well.
One of my favorite parts about having a little one in school is making fun and healthy lunches for him everyday. Here are some of mine and his favorites.
